MONTEREY PARK BRUGGEMEYER LIBRARY

The $13 million project was awarded $8.8 million in State Bond Act Funding for a 52,000 sf renovation and expansion of the City of Monterey Park’s 1959 public library. Completed in 2006, the second floor addition houses the children’s library, assembly spaces, the adult literacy program and staff areas. The first floor includes adult and young adult areas, the unique international collection, technical services, and main service points.

The project re-organizes interior spaces to clarify circulation through the entire building. This occurs along a spine connecting the second floor service point to the main stair and reference service point on the first floor. The design introduces a greater variety of spaces organized along the spine; from the exposed, tapered girders of the original building to the clerestory wings of the second floor.
