................................................................ BRUGGEMEYER MEMORIAL LIBRARY RENOVATION AND EXPANSION - update The $13 million project will renovate and expand the City of Monterey Park’s 1959 public library and has been awarded $8.8 million in State Bond Act Funding. A second floor addition will house the children’s library, assembly spaces, the adult literacy program and staff areas. The first floor will include the adult and young adult areas, the unique international collection, technical services, and main service points. The project proposes major re-organization of interior spaces to clarify circulation through the entire building. This occurs along a spine connecting the second floor service point to the main stair and reference service point on the first floor. The design introduces a greater variety of spaces organized along the spine; from the exposed, tapered girders of the original building to the clerestory wings of the second floor. The population of Monterey Park is nearly two-thirds Asian and one-third Hispanic in origin. The new design attempts to reflect these cultures by combining a strong horizontality of openings and overhangs with colored, plaster shear walls that interact visually with the raised, second floor box. These treatments are meant to be compatible with the original 1950’s building while projecting an image of a new, 21st century library. |
