MALAMA LEARNING CENTER

The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii sponsored a competition in 2003 for a new learning center on a 3-acre site at the Kapolei High School. The dual-purpose center is intended to bring together education activities of the high school and community with a focus on natural conservation and cultural stewardship.

The center is to be a premier cultural gathering place for the new community and serve as an innovative model for sustainable building design in Hawaii. The design proposes an organizing courtyard under a fabric canopy that provides evaporative cooling and solar collection. The surrounding building spirals out from the high school buildings in an opening gesture to the landscape and community.
