................................................................ MARION AND ROBERT S. WILSON MEDICAL STUDENT CENTER The privately funded 3300 square foot expansion fulfills a need for student study and relaxation space for students in UCLAs School of Medicine. The site, a roof garden on top of the Jerry Lewis Neuromuscular Research Center, required a carefully coordinated addition in order to preserve and enhance its garden setting and so as to prevent disruption of medical laboratories below. Set against a backdrop of pines and amid the planters and lawn of the roof, the free-standing penthouse reads as an open garden pavilion. A curved vault, exposed underneath, reinforces the open nature of the singular space and differentiates the new addition from the austere base of the existing building. The new steel structure replaces 75 tons of concrete trelliswork which was removed and transfers its lighter load into existing columns which remain. |
