PHILADELPHIA CENTRAL CITY URBAN DESIGN

The proposed new urban design of downtown Philadelphia links the downtown center to the rest of the city through definition of two cross-axial regional transportation corridors and a new open space continuity linking Olmstead’s Fairmont Park with the Delaware River waterfront. In center city, mixed-use urban nodes form gateways defining the edges of the center along the cross axis. The plan makes major destination centers at each river where they meet the east-west cross-axis. The proposal also outlines the continuity necessary between scales of urban inhabitants; from the individual to the regional. The design was a finalist in the City Visions Competition.
