................................................................ ZIERING RESIDENCE ADDITION This project transforms an existing one story ranch house and two story wing by replacing the two story portion with a new master bedroom suite over a garage and family room; while expanding the lower floor with a new bedroom, bath and gallery. The main objective was to add substantial volume to the house, without destroying its intimate qualities. To prevent the two-story volume from dominating the low scale of the one-story house, the new roof height is kept low, corresponding to the existing ridgeline. This also serves to preserve much-coveted ocean sitelines of neighbors. Material changes differentiate the one-story, smooth stucco front volume, from the back addition clad in wood and copper. Continuous glazing between the top of walls and roof eave offers generous daylighting and uninterrupted views of the ocean and adjacent mountains from the interior. Back walls slide open to connect garden spaces and landscape views to the interior. |
