LAX Automated Biometric Boarding Gates

As part of Los Angeles International Airport’s (LAX) airside improvement efforts, the firm provided design and coordination for the installation of fifteen biometric boarding gates on the concourse level of the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT). The phased project followed a successful trial at three automated gates aimed at increasing efficiency, accuracy, safety, and passenger experience.

The team worked with LAWA’s Information Management and Technology Group, multiple Security departments, and IER, a gate equipment, implementation, and maintenance company, to ensure existing exit widths remained the same. Additionally, no square footage was added or changes in occupancy needed to accommodate the new units.

Designed and permitted as a single package, the project’s implementation and onsite commissioning was divided into two phases to minimize disruption. The first included six gates while the second included nine. Existing boarding gate readers were decommissioned and new security railings installed as part of the process.
