LAX Landside Access Urban Design Analysis

In response to the Los Angeles International Airport’s (LAX)’s Landside Access Modernization Program (LAMP), the firm was hired by LA World Airports (LAWA) to provide an urban design analysis report focused on pedestrian passenger experience across the 3,500-acre LAX campus.

Evaluation of movement and access, placemaking and connectivity opportunities across three main functional zones were analyzed with the goals of elevating customer experiences and the LAX brand. Specific study areas included the Central Terminal Area (CTA), Automated People Mover (APM), Consolidated Car Rental Facility (CONRAC), Intermodal Transportation Facility (ITF) West, and enabling projects and roadways.

The firm’s functional and aesthetic analysis provided LAX leadership a comprehensive understanding of pedestrian experiences specific to LAMP projects but within the context of airport-wide systems and existing guidelines. It also offered a micro-level perspective of opportunities and impacts to the LAX campus development. Those findings could be applied to preventing coordination errors or gaps between planned projects, continuity and connectivity potentials across transportation systems, and preliminary information that could form a more cohesive design and pedestrian experience at LAX.
