LAX Wayfinding Strategic Guidelines

In response to the Los Angeles International Airport’s (LAX)’s Landside Access Modernization Program (LAMP) and in coordination with a parallel Pedestrian Experience Urban Design Analysis, the firm led an environmental graphics team to provide Wayfinding Strategic Guidelines that establish a governing policy to be applied uniformly to all new construction, modernization or renovation projects. These strategic guidelines form a foundation of continuity, connectivity, and consistency necessary to create an empowering and seamless wayfinding customer experience throughout the increasingly complex 3,500-acre airport campus.

The report established eight overarching principles to simplify the passenger journey. Specific wayfinding elements, along with criteria for usage, were proposed at a range of experiential scales. A final component of the report considered various “what, where, why, and how” elements of wayfinding based on the many types of customer journeys anticipated in the future. Specific opportunities for wayfinding were charted as navigational tools for departing, arriving and connecting passengers through one of the busiest airports in the world.
