LAX Sepulveda Pedestrian Bridge

As part of Los Angeles World Airports’ Airfield and Terminal Modernization Program, the LAX Sepulveda Pedestrian Bridge reestablishes a vital pedestrian connection between the Central Terminal Area and the City of Los Angeles. Spanning 147 feet across one of the airport’s busiest corridors, the new post-tensioned concrete bridge replaces the former at-grade crosswalk, enhancing both pedestrian safety and vehicular circulation. At each end, glass-enclosed elevator towers and sculptural concrete stairs connect to landscaped public plazas, creating an accessible and visually cohesive gateway experience. A stainless-steel architectural fabric guardrail—supported by curved, aviation-inspired forms—defines the bridge’s signature appearance, while integrated LED lighting highlights the structure’s form and provides a safe, illuminated walkway for travelers.

Paul Murdoch Architects leads the architectural design of the bridge, elevator and stair cores, lighting integration, and public realm elements in close collaboration with HNTB’s engineering team. The bridge and its adjoining plazas incorporate smooth-finish concrete walls, textured plantings, and curvilinear paving geometries that unify the pedestrian environment. Opportunities for integrated public art will celebrate the character of Los Angeles while enhancing the experience of movement, transparency, and light. Together, these elements transform a functional crossing into an elegant civic gesture, reinforcing LAWA’s commitment to safe, connected, and artfully designed infrastructure at LAX.
