October 1 Memorial
To be constructed in Las Vegas, Nevada, the design competition for the “One October Memorial” seeks to establish a permanent memorial that will remember the 58 individuals who perished in the immediate aftermath of the October 1, 2017 tragedy at the Route 91 Harvest Festival. Additionally, the memorial honors the survivors and heroic caregivers to celebrate the resiliency and compassion of the Las Vegas and Route 91 community.
Selected as one of five finalists in a qualifications-based process, Paul Murdoch Architects worked with a national team of landscape, cultural heritage, community outreach, engineering, and lighting design consultants. The design, which emerged from a months-long process of engagement with the community, utilizes the stylized architectural iconography of Angels’ wings in a long arcade, to echo how the community of families of lost loved ones, survivors, and first responders and emergency responders refer to these innocent victims. The memorial, which includes references to individuals, the community, and the natural surroundings, serves as an anchor for collective memory and healing for the deadliest mass shooting in American history. A winner will be selected in Fall 2023.
